The U.S. Department of Justice awarded more than $10 million to eight Indian Tribes in Western Washington, including the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis. U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan said that the money is specifically to enhance services to crime victims and improve criminal justice in the tribal communities, tailored to the needs of each tribe.
Durkan said “One size does not fit all, and I am pleased these grants will address specific needs on Tribal lands.”
The grants include nearly $2.6 million for crime issues related to alcohol and substance abuse. This includes over $400,000 for the Chehalis Reservation.
Five of the tribes received significant funding to combat violence against women, with an additional $300,000 for Chehalis.
In addition, tribes also received funding for their community oriented policing efforts providing for tribal police, training and equipment.
In total, the Chehalis Tribe will receive $1,125,991.
